Dear Friends:
Parental rights are on the verge of quickly slipping away. That would most assuredly happen if the Senate adopts a radical United Nations treaty that some in Washington are pushing to ratify.
Known as the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, the treaty would largely hand over parental authority on such things as religious upbringing, discipline, and education to the government, which would be required to answer to the dictates of a liberal international committee. Just as disturbing, it would give children unprecedented rights against their parents—a reversal of roles.
If the United States ratifies this treaty—which was signed by President Clinton in 1995 but is yet to be submitted to the Senate for final sign off—it would become the supreme law of the land. America would effectively have its hands tied on how best to raise the next generations.
This should strike fear into the heart of every American, not just parents.
Recognizing this threat, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) has introduced a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that President Obama should not submit this dangerous treaty to the Senate for ratification. S.Res. 519 affirms the rights of parents—not an international body—“to raise their children and to impart their values and religious beliefs.”
This is a message that every senator should support.
If you agree, please urge your senators to support Sen. DeMint’s resolution, S.Res. 519. You can reach them by dialing the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or by sending a suggested e-mail or one entirely your own here.
Thank you for standing for the basic parental freedoms so foundational to our great nation.
